In an attempt to comfortably accommodate more commuters in Navi Mumbai metros, the City and Industrial Development Corporation of Maharashtra Ltd. (CIDCO) has decided to increase the width of the coach from 2.9 to 3.2 metres.

The wider coaches are expected to accommodate almost 10 to 15 per cent more passengers than the 2.9 metre coaches. The wider coaches would also make it easier for the commuters to board and alight from the metro during rush hours.

The width of the Mumbai metro coaches will continue to be 2.9-metre. Initially, CIDCO had agreed to go with the standard width coaches for the Navi Mumbai metro project but later decided to introduce a wider coach.

During a discussion with the state government CIDCO officials argued that metro projects globally prefer wider coaches. The new phase of metro rail projects in Bengaluru and New Delhi is also likely to have 3.2 metre coaches.

BS Kulkarni, engineer of the Navi Mumbai Metro Rail project, CIDCO said, “We have decided to commission metro rail with coaches of 3.2 metre widths as they are more comfortable. The coaches have a capacity to carry around 1,500 passengers of which 200 passengers would be able to sit.”
