Double-decker locals for Mumbai?

If railway minister Suresh Prabhu has his way, then after air-conditioned trains on the suburban network, double decker locals could be the next.

As part of his plans to transform Mumbai’s suburban local train network, the railway minister has envisaged a double decker train for the city. According to him, this would offer a viable solution to commuting woes in Mumbai.

“A comprehensive plan is being drawn at a national level for Mumbai’s development and improvement of infrastructure, which includes exploring the possibility of running double-decker local trains, air-conditioned locals, expansion of existing system, more tracks, platforms, among others” said Mr Prabhu on Saturday after flagging off three new outstation trains from the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.

This could be a second bonanza for the city, which also awaits AC trains. “A trial run of air-conditioned locals is scheduled on March 15, 2015 at Integral Coach Factory, Chennai,” said Mr Prabhu.

According to the railway officials, the double decker trains would help to cater to Mumbai’s burgeoning commuters. More info
