Delhi’s crumbling walls, Mangu Singh, the new managing director of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), flagged off the Metro’s proposed phase III ‘heritage corridor’ on Tuesday.

The proposed corridor will connect Janpath Metro station with Kashmere Gate through Mandi House.

TA tunnel boring machine was lowered near Chemlsford Club in central Delhi in the presence of the DMRC chief and work started on the 9.4-kilometre underground Metro line.

The ‘heritage corridor’ came under scrutiny from conservation experts as the proposed line passes close to some important heritage sites – Jantar Mantar, Delhi Gate, Khooni Darwaaza, Ferozeshah Kotla, Sunehri Masjid and Red Fort, besides some lesser known but ancient shrines.

Objections were also raised about the vibrations caused by the Metro. In certain areas on the airport express line, residents have complained about the vibrations causing damage to their houses.

Conservationists argued that such vibrations could cause irreparable damage to the monuments and may even trigger their collapse.

Moreover, the ‘heritage corridor’, which passes through Old Delhi, is dotted with old houses that face the risk of collapsing because of the vibrations. More info
