I will have to agree that the fancy Mumbai metro adds to the glamour of India’s entertainment capital. But the controversies even before its flag-off ceremony weren’t a good sign for a project which has been long overdue to the city.
The Chief Minister of the State Prithviraj Chavan threatened to skip the flag-off ceremony, if the fare suggested by the Government was not accepted by Reliance Infrastructure Limited (RIL), the private partner in the metro project.
Mumbai Metro is operated by Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL), a Public-private partnership between RIL and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
While the Mumbaikars are glad that finally Mumbai — the metro city — has its own metro rail, the MMRDA has taken its private partner RIL to court in a dispute over which of them has the authority to set the fares. More info
