Mumbai Metro not immune to ticketless travel

By Ateeq Shaikh

If you thought it would be impossible to travel without ticket on the two latest transportation modes in Mumbai–Mumbai Metro and Mumbai Monorail–you are mistaken. You can, if luck is on your side!

It doesn’t require rocket science to figure out how it can be done. Ever since the two modes of transport have been inaugurated, there have been several instances of people not swiping their smart cards/tokens to enter the paid area of the station and even travelling without paying the fare.

Due to the massive crowd at Versova, Andheri and Ghatkopar stations, there have been cases where three commuters have crossed the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) gate after one person swiped his token/smart card.

Similarly, while exiting, the same methodology can be applied for passing through the AFC.

On Wednesday, a test run was carried out to check if any attendant at the metro stations could apprehend people who cross the AFC gate on someone else token/smart card. The result favoured individuals.

However, if luck is not on your side and you get caught travelling ticketless or with improper ticket between Versova and Ghatkopar on Mumbai Metro, you will have to pay a penalty and the fare. More info
