In its first year of operations, the Mumbai monorail – built and commissioned by Scomi Engineering Bhd – has ferried over five million passengers.

In a statement today, Scomi said the achievement – announced by Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority – was way ahead of operational targets.

“Chembur, which is the northmost station, has now exceeded the forecasted Year 2031 peak hour ridership in this first year!”

The Mumbai monorail started commercial operations of Phase One from Wadala to Chembur, a distance of 8.9km, on Feb 2 last year – plying the stretch from 6am to 10pm daily.

The four-car Mumbai monorail trains can travel at speeds of up to 80kph, with the capacity of 564 passengers per trip per direction. More info
