MUMBAI: The city will have a pool of 550 more women drivers by March next year as a host of agencies, in the aftermath of the Delhi rape, have started training them.
These women will be empowered to drive cabs and ensure the safety of commuters, especially women, travelling alone from airports and railway stations. Many of these cabbies are also being trained in martial arts.
At present, the city has just around 35 female drivers who ply cabs for Priyadarshini Taxis and Viira Cabs. Their strength is likely to rise over 15 times by the next fiscal year, said sources. By contrast, around 18,000 men ply radio and tourist cabs in the city. More info
