Navi Mumbai’s first metro line, running from CBD Belapur to Pendher, will become operational by May 2014. The City and Industrial Development Corporation (Cidco) is now scouting for suppliers to buy the rolling stock for the c, comprising of rakes and the signalling system.

Cidco is presently looking at buying six rakes with four coaches each, which will help ferry 55,000 passengers every day on the 11-km CBD Belapur-Pendhar line. “We have invited bids for suppliers,” a senior Cidco official said. Cidco is hoping to award the tender for procurement of rolling stock in the next six months.

Unlike Mumbai, where the metro is being built on a Public-Private Partnership basis with the private entity investing in the project, Cidco is building the entire Rs. 2,000-crore project on its own.

It has already floated and awarded tenders to build the viaduct. It has also floated tenders for building the 11 metro stations and the depot at Taloja. CIDCO has plans to construct a 106.4km Metro network across Navi Mumbai through five metro corridors. The first corridor is the Belapur-Taloja-Khandeshwar corridor. More info
