AHMEDABAD: The proposed Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train could provide a fresh sparkle to Surat, the industrial city that processes nine of the 11 diamonds sold globally.
“This would be a big game changer as Surat would be easily accessible to foreign buyers,” said Dinesh Navadiya, president of Surat Diamond Association, which has 2,400 members with a combined annual turnover of Rs 80,000 crore.
More than two years after the Centre gave its nod to the high-speed Mumbai-Ahmedabad rail corridor, the Narendra Modi-led NDA government has announced in its first railway budget the bullet train that is expected to reduce travel time between the two financial hubs to less than a third of the seven hours taken by the fastest train Duranto at present.
