Railway budget may hold little hope for Mumbai

MUMBAI: Suburban railway commuters will have to keep expectations in check as the Centre may not have anything substantial to offer to Mumbai in this year’s railway budget.

Expectations from the new government were high as the Mumbai Metropolitan Region delivered a handsome victory to the BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.

The state is also scheduled to vote in October, which created expectations in some quarters that the government may announce a slew of projects to benefit commuters.

A senior railway official said, “Neither CR or WR are likely to get any more services due to a paucity of funds, lack of rakes and availability of path. The only major project that can pass the muster is the Airoli-Kalwa Link, which will ease commuting between Navi Mumbai and Kalyan.”

The project too is likely because the Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation (MRVC) has said it will not press for any funds but look at innovative method funding to execute the project and recover the cost from existing surcharge. More info
