MUMBAI: Work on four metro corridors that will boost north-south and east-west connectivity is likely to start in 12 months.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan on Saturday said the Mumbai Metro would be extended till Thane and the final project report would be available with the government in a month's time.
The Metro project seems to have got stuck because of lack of adequate clearances from the environment ministry. The plots identified by MMRDA for the car depot at both places fall under the coastal regulatory zone. The ministry had given a conditional clearance to the depots. However, Reliance and MMRDA claim the ministry has laid down conditions that make the project a non-starter.
Focusing on completing mega-infrastructure projects in and around Mumbai, the state government has allocated Rs.4,825 crore for theMumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) for fiscal 2012-13 beginning April 1.
The delay in completing work on the Metro line is not only affecting Mumbaiites, but is also burning a hole in the pockets of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
The GCC countries are witnessing a noticeable movement to activate the development of infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on the development of transport projects, mainly the metro and railways which are aimed at paving the way for the Pan GCC Train which will help achieve more integration in the light of the current economic growth, the global economic developments and the trends towards the creation of more major economic blocs.
