Hunt on for experts to handle state’s Metro projects

The Maharashtra government has begun its hunt for an expert to take care of Metro rail projects in Mumbai and other metropolis in the state. Recently at a meeting with urban development (UD) officials, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan directed UD officials to look for expertise for Metro projects, rather relying on bureaucrats for monitoring such important projects.

‘Extend high-speed corridor up to Bangalore’

Railway officials want the proposed Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune high-speed corridor extended up to Bangalore, which has witnessed a glut in rail as well as air traffic in the past few years. The pre-feasibility study for the Ahmedabad-Mumbai-Pune corridor has already been completed by Systra, a French consultancy firm. The 643km-long route, if built, will cost an estimated Rs 100 crore per km.

Rel Infra expects to commission Mumbai Metro by CY12

Reliance Infrastructure in its second quarter earnings, posted on Tuesday, saw rise of 44% in topline. For the quarter ended September 30, 2011, the company’s net profit came in at Rs 496 cr vs Rs 170 cr. For the same period, the company’s total income stood at Rs 3,950 cr vs Rs 2,400 cr.

Britain's Atkins to increase Middle East headcount

Atkins, the British construction engineer, said Thursday it will increase its headcount in Middle East after recording a 70 percent rise in regional full-year profit. The firm, whose projects include the Dubai Metro and Durrat Al Bahrain, said it will grow employee numbers chiefly in Saudi Arabia and Qatar to accelerate expansion in those markets.
