Mumbai Metro, a joint venture between Reliance Infrastructure, Veolia Transport and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and designed to reduce traffic congestion in Mumbai, has crossed the symbolic threshold of 100 million passengers.
As of now, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) is constructing the steel bridge by using pre-cast concrete segments in which a number of small segments are cast between two pillars. The Western Railway has agreed to provide blocks of about two to four hours per day for the construction work.
The work of the most critical Metro Bridge over Western Railway Tracks at Andheri is going on in full swing under active supervision by the railways authorities, who have been cooperative. The work on the cable stayed bridge is progressing, speedily. The Form Travellers have been erected and the deck casting work at WEH bridge (over Jog flyover) is in progress.
The construction of the first Metro line, the 11.4-kilometre long Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar corridor, started in February 2008. Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd, a special purpose vehicle formed by Reliance Infrastructure, MMRDA and Veolia Transport are constructing the route.
It is thought the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) ‘will soon accept the request’ to fund the $2.26 billion Line 3 of the Mumbai Metro rail network. JICA is currently working on finalising concessional financing for the third line.
